Great hiking

Hiking, and nothing but hiking, is probably the greatest thing to do in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxon Switzerland National Park. The age-old landscape, with its bizarre rock formations and fascinating flora and fauna, makes it one of the most enchanting hiking areas in Europe.

The famous Bastei Bridge offers amazing views over the Elbe River valley. And if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the European Sleeper passing by. Photo ©Francesco Carovillano.

Historic towns

The Elbe Valley is steeped in a long and fascinating cultural history. European history was made here in the midst of idyllic nature and along important trade routes. It is present to this day in the historic towns, castles, gardens and forts.

The paintings and poems of the Romantic artists made the area world-famous. Numerous sights and points of interest are easily accessible everywhere in the area.
